A Little Fashion for Your Foot Troubles

It's time to forget the age old adage, "Beauty is Pain."

Yaleet Inc. of Farmingdale, N.Y., has created NAOT, a high fashion shoe with a medical advantage. These kicks are fashionable and functional with their innovative removable foot beds.

"We can put an orthotic directly into the shoe and get the gait correction we need," explains Scottsdale, Ariz., podiatrist Dr. Mark Forman. "An orthotic is a custom molded shoe insert that facilitates greater arch support to the wearer and alleviates pain. Because NAOT foot beds are removable, orthotics can replace the base of the shoe and help reduce conditions such as plantar fasciitis, the most common cause of heel pain."

Although consumers may opt to remove them, NAOT foot beds are designed to distribute weight, absorb shock and provide arch support for balance, according to the NAOT Web site. Each line of NAOT shoes endures three or four fit tests within the company before being released.

"If it's hurting my feet, I'm not going to [release it]," says Yaleet product and marketing manager Ayelet Lax.

Local NAOT sales manager Barbara Forman distributes shoes to patients in need of a little fashion for their foot troubles.

"No one even knows that you have an orthotic in," says Barbara Forman "You can be fashionable and comfortable at the same time."

"[Our product] creates a unique comfort in the market," says Lax. "One of our biggest draws to our clients is they look at us not only as an orthopedic shoe, they look at us as fashionable. Ladies today do not want to look like their grandmother did."

The NAOT line offers narrow and wide sizes for boots, sandals, utility clogs, everyday shoes and even children's styles. Retail cost for NAOT ranges from $100 - $170, but patients like Joan Martin, 69, claim it's worth every penny.

"You get what you pay for. If you're going to buy cheap then you're going to ruin your feet."
